Jack likes to "Talk the Talk" and you can too! so sharpen up your Blackjack terms with his detailed Blackjack glossary.

Action - the amount of money risked by a blackjack player during an entire blackjack session.
Basic Strategy - a complete set of blackjack rules that cover all possible decisions a blackjack player may encounter. These decisions or rules are followed without taking into account any other blackjack players cards or previously dealt cards.
Betting Limits - the minimum and maximum amounts that can be wagered on one bet in blackjack.
Blackjack - the first two cards that consist of an Ace and a 10-value card. (A/10, A/J, A/Q, A/K).
Burn Card - a single card or more, taken from the top of the shuffled blackjack deck to be placed face down in the discard tray on the table.
Bust - when your hand total goes over 21.
Card Counter - a blackjack player who tracks or "keeps count" of the cards that have been dealt.
Comp - short for complimentaries. Complimentaries are gifts provided to players to entice them to continue playing. Typical comps include free room, food & beverage.
Cut - to divide a blackjack deck into two parts.
Cut Card - a colored plastic card given to a blackjack player to divide the shuffled blackjack deck.
Double Down - to place a wager up to half your original, usually on a 2 card total of 9,10, or 11 and receive only one more card.
Double Exposure - when both the blackjack dealer's cards are dealt face up for the blackjack player to see.
Even Money - to get paid the same as you wagered plus your original wager when the player has a blackjack and the dealer has an ace showing.
Face Cards - the King, Queen or Jack of each suite.
First Base - the 1st seat at the blackjack table nearest to the blackjack dealer's left hand.
Hit - to receive another card to your existing hand.
Hole Card - the blackjack dealer's card dealt face down.
Hot - term used for when a blackjack dealer or blackjack player is on a winning streak.
Insurance - a side bet when the blackjack dealer's up card is an Ace.
Natural - a blackjack hand whose first two cards total 21. Also known as Blackjack.
Odds - the mathematical chances that a certain event will occur. (i.e. dealer gets 5 Blackjacks in a row!) What are the odds of that? :-)
Pit - the area surrounded by gaming tables in the Casino.
Pit Boss - the overseer of the games in the pit.
Push - when the blackjack dealer's hand and the blackjack player's hand are a tie.
Shill - a casino employee pretending to be a player.
Shoe - the device that holds multiple decks of cards of which the dealer slides out cards one at a time when dealing blackjack.
Soft Hand - a hand, which consists of an Ace. The Ace can be counted as 1 or 11.
Split - two cards of the same rank that can be separated into two separate hands, providing you match your original bet.
Stand - opposite of hit. To not take any more cards into your existing hand.
Stiff Hand - the hand totals of 12 through 16.
Surrender - some Casino’s have a rule that allows you to withdraw your hand after the first two cards if you don’t like your chances of winning and lose only half of your bet.
Tip - a gratuity given to the dealer.
Twenty-One - any 3 or more playing cards that have a collective total of 21 (e.g. 6/8/7, 5/7/9, 3/4/5/6/3, etc.) Not Blackjack, but 21.
Unit - the minimum bet limit of the blackjack table.
Up Card - the blackjack dealer's card that is dealt face up.
